The Formist Group
Formist is a design studio, a publisher and a type foundry. Driven by the belief that design is as much about feeling as it is about clarity, Formist utilise their unique design experience to develop rigorous solutions for commissioners and self-initiated projects. Every Formist project exhibits a commitment to research, detail and quality.
Formist has over 25 years experience as an industry leader specialising in design for some of the world’s most exciting cultural and commercial organisations. These commissioners include Hopscotch Films, Sydney Opera House, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Preservation Music, Entertainment One, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation, Black Ink, University of Technology Sydney, University of NSW Press, Uro Publications, Power Institute, Australian War Memorial, Powerhouse Museum, Australia Council for the Arts, Roslyn Oxley 9, Universal Music, Candalepas Associates and Kaldor Public Art Projects.
In addition, the organisation also comprises Formist Foundry, a commercial outlet for unique and expressive typefaces; and Formist Studio, a design group that develops bespoke solutions for commissioners and self-initiated projects.
Mark Gowing has been developing his own visual language for over 30 years. Gowing’s rigorous and experimental values are executed via his Sydney-based design firm, Formist where he creates emotional, tactile and refined outcomes that are centred around the rhythms of language and typography. Gowing’s work has been exhibited and published around the world. He has been honoured with solo exhibitions at the Warsaw International Poster Biennale in Poland, the Divieto D’Affissione in Torino, Italy and Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.
