Year of the Monkey
A poised and sometimes bizarre reflection of a year in the life.
The compellingly cryptic Year of the Monkey explores the topsy-turvy state of the world through a series of captivating illustrations. Bringing his signature playfulness and precise geometric style to these elliptical works, designer Paul Garbett creates a light-hearted tone that conceals a clever deception.
As the mischief-making monkey descends into surreal landscapes, we begin to spot signs of politics and pop culture. A keen observer of his environment, Garbett alludes not only to some of the year’s momentous and minor global events, but also to his personal experiences. As a result, the illustrations’ friendly colour and quirky feel contrast with the gravity of the subject matter, creating tension and provoking our curiosity.
Year of the Monkey is a stunning limited art edition of just 16 copies, each signed by Paul Garbett. Hand bound in a linen hardcover with duplex lay-flat binding, the book features foil-blocked cover detail and a striped fore-edge.
Paul Garbett is the creative director of Garbett Design in Sydney. His work has shown in international exhibitions for more than 10 years and, during this time, has secured more than 200 awards. In 2015, Garbett became a member of the prestigious Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI).
